Favorite photographs preserve memories of relatives, friends, pets, events and more that might otherwise be lost to time. Those of us who still have such images often take their value for granted, but it's important to remember that not everyone has a treasured photo collection. Economic hardship, or natural disasters- such as fires, floods and hurricanes- can wipe out an individual's visual record of the past.
The Human Picture Project helps to fill that void. The project was recently launched by two successful wedding and portrait photographers to create, as they say, "portraits of individuals and families who have suffered hardships or have never had a visual record of themselves."
The cost is either donated by the principals, Jennifer Graham and Jodie Tsekrekas, or it's funded through special events and donations.
Recently the photographers went to New Orleans for an initiative called Family in Focus. There they took new portraits of families and individuals who survived Hurricane Katrina. We forget that many of these people lost all of their belongings, including treasured photographs.
