And your observation regarding the fixing of moments is a very insightful one, JeffR.
We photographers are visual people....being able to 'look' back in time this way never ceases to fascinate me. Along with my son's wedding we had a 50th Anniversary gig for my parents one day last week. A cousin put together over 50 years of old films and many stills on a DVd; it was priceless.

I took 100s of photos (but shhhh, don't tell the bride;-) this might be my favorite. Taken about an hour before the ceremony:

As you said: to illustrate the unfolding of a human life.

Dh and I had a routine- like a surgical team:
I would say, "Tissue!" and he would slap one into my hand.

Those lanterns made every thing one big SPARKLE combined with the tears.
