A day at the fair - 13 pix
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 05:42 PM by Blue_In_AK
As always, there were so many fun things to see and do at the fair, that I ending up taking way, way too many pictures. We may not have the biggest fair in the world, but we have a good time. Here are a few.

The cabbages are a bit on the puny side this year since we had so much rain. The biggest one I saw was only 56 pounds. But I'll bet this is the biggest kohlrabi you'll EVER see, a new world record, 81.7 pounds.

Mmm, bacon, bacon, bacon!! (I'm KIDDING....)

Spiderman dropped in for the day.

Prize-winning home brew. The judges of this competition must have had a good time. :)

The inevitable spin - haha.

Lots of bored Alaska women love to quilt (maybe while nipping at the home brew?)

The giant slide

The Ferris wheel is the only suitable ride for a senior citizen such as myself.

We couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting.

Wheeeee!!

And beautiful fireworks to end the day.

Blue_in_CA, if you're seeing this, are you homesick yet?

1. An update...
The kohlrabi got beat out by an even bigger one brought in yesterday. The world record is now over 96 pounds. Apparently there were 12 record-shattering kohlrabis brought into the fair this year.

What on earth does one do with a 96-pound kohlrabi??

2. I have no idea what a kohlrabi is
I know.. I could google it but I won't. Leave it to my imagination. I'm thinkin' Invasion of the Body Snatchers sorta' plant.
:scared:

Not going to pick a fave, cause I love the whole bunch.

Have lived in Colorado for.... well, a long time and I've never been to our State Fair. I guess because it's a long drive (not really a day trip) and it is in one of the hottest parts of the state. I was reading recently that attendance for county/state fairs has been going down nationwide. It'd be sad to see some fairs start going bye-bye.

The history going back to when we actually had farmers in this country has been fading away. And maybe who can grow the largest kohlrabi, bake the best pie, brew the best brew, have the nicest lookin' pig.... those things aren't very sexy to the yute' in this country.

Thanks for sharin' your day. What I dig about this group more than anything is that I can travel to places I've never been....

Whoa!!!

6. Think of a cabbage with teeny tiny leaves and a big swollen stem
You have a kohlrabi. (cabbage is base, make it flower and you have broccoli, white flower=cauliflower, lots of little heads=brussel sprouts, big swollen stem=kholrabi)

7. Speaking of cabbage...
The winning cabbage this year was 76+ pounds, nowhere near the state record (101 pounds), but still not too bad for a rainy summer. You guys would have to see these vegetables to believe them.

3. Awesome quilts, and great shots
all around. Thanks for sharing.

I do need to visit Alaska one of these days, our cousin is moving to Vancouver in December, so we're one step closer to getting there... :)

4. Vancouver is actually not far from Southeast Alaska...
You should definitely take the ferry along the inside passage if you get a chance. It's really just gorgeous down there, especially if you happen to travel when it's not raining (i.e., avoid July and August).

5. Wow on the pictures but you can keep
your weird giant veggie. All these are very good, but #10 could be on next year flier easily.

8. Most definitely ....
home sick! Those are great. It looks just like it did 20 years ago! I think I can even smell the livestock and cotton candy! Not a great combo, but still smells like the fair to me

9. Very true - some things never change.
That's why I love the fair, you can always count on it. The only thing missing from previous years is Angel's Empanadas. I don't know what happened to Angel, but I sure did love those things. But the rest of the food -- the barbecued turkey legs, Aunt Linda's funnel cakes, salmon quesadillas -- all still there. Mm-mm.

10. Awesome pix.
I love #10. The sun on the mountain backdrop with the lights coming on at the Fair is wonderful.
I had planned on doing some late afternoon pix at our Fair this weekend, but it looks to be overcast and raining. :(

I also the portrait of the older woman at the spinning wheel.
She has a beautiful smile.
