1. Canon is about to release a new version of the Digital Rebel
I suspect that might knock the price of the current one down a bit.

It's an SLR, so get the lens included kit, naturally.

5. i have a canon powershot a95
i love it! i bought it on ebay from cameta camera as a package deal for about $430. i got a tripod, a 512 mb card, a 32 mb card, software to retrieve lost photos (which i have used!), a card reader, and a lens cleaning kit. it would have cost way over $500 with all that stuff, so it was a great deal (i am a great shopper!).

6. I love my Olympus C-5000
5.0 megapixel. The zoom is OK, but I'd prefer to get a telephoto lens (you can buy lenses to fit on this camera). I use it for shooting models and bands, and I think it's been great for my needs. You can do a search on my username in the photography group if you want to see some samples of the output.

Peace,
Bella
