That they use personally, doesn't smear black ink all over glossy paper, and doesn't break 'tomorrow' - in other words, if you're going to recommend HP, forget it.

3. I have an Epson R300

It does an excellent job. You can get it for less than 150 now. For a little over your budget the R800 at $399 uses UltraChrome ink for archival printing. Check out InkjetArt for lots of info on Epson printers and inks.

As soon as I get a rebate check that I'm expecting I'm putting it towards a Niagra bulk feed system for my printer. I print a lot and cartridge costs are killing me. It's expensive up front but it should pay for itself within 6 months. Niagara II Continuous Ink Flow System

5. I've been looking at that and the R800, but also been thinking about
going the extra mile and getting a Canon Pixma I9000, for those sweet borderless 13x19 inch prints - so I could sell them at about 5000% cost :D

10. I've been pretty happy with my Canon i960
It's not the best there is, but it does do quality prints with no smearing (even when using third-party ink cartridges).

6. I have an R200
and it works great. I do a lot of photo printing for my modelling business (business cards, photos for autographing and portfolios, etc).

Peace,

11. I vote Epson too. (I've a 2200, the R800 is PERFECT for photos too)
The R800 uses pigment inks, lasts 100 years on Epson brand paper... And AWESOME for glossy b/w prints, nothing surprasses.

9. Hmm
I know you said no HP, but I bought a 2175 all-in-one around this time last year. It prints beautiful photographs (I print mostly black and whites) and I've had no problems with it smearing on glossy paper or breaking. But maybe you happen to have bad luck with buying HPs.

12. I went from the consumer Epsons to the consumer Canon
and have been much happier.

I have the S900, which has been superceded by now. Which ever way you go, be sure to get a model that has individual ink tanks. The speed of the Canon has been a big factor in my satisfaction, and the quality of the print is every bit a good (or better), though the Epson claims of longevity are appealing.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Epson Matte papers for displaying your work, no matter what brand your pinter. Really beautiful.
