I caught one too!
Edited on Fri Jul-14-06 06:39 PM by Gregorian
This tattered Monarch Tiger Swallowtail was drifting around outside. As usual, I grab the camera and start chasing him/her around the yard. But for some reason it fell in love with this flower. Yippee! I'm so stoked.

1. Nice shots.
I think that might be a swallowtail, though, and not a monarch.

2. Tiger swallow tail.
That's right.

It's exciting, but a bit frustrating that I have so much to learn. With digital, I'm finally taking shots and immediately finding out what they look like. Man, after thirty years, I'm still just a beginner.

3. I never even attempted to be a photographer
(except snapshots) before digital came along. I really like the instant gratification.

4. I'll be honest.
These three shots came from 85! Not all of them were bad. But between composition, depth of field, exposure, and focus, I find that most of my shots are anything but gratification. I know what you meant, though. It's pretty damned cool.

5. Love the one against the sky.
Good crisp detail and colors on #1.

Are you using the AutoFocus?
I've had to switch to manual focus for close up stuff.

My friend's daughter calls them "Flutter-Bys" :)

6. That's cute.
I can't believe I used AF for all of them. Mostly because I have two issues with manual focus right now. One is the stiction in the focus ring. It's impossible to use. I'm getting rid of the lens. The other is the discrepancy between what I see and what is in focus, when using MF. That is an adjustment internally within the camera body that I intend to delve into after I use several other lenses on the body.

I love manual focus. So this is a bit difficult for me to put up with. However, AF is absolutely amazing on the D200. There are many situations where I must have MF, though.

Butterflies, I mean flutter-bys, are incredible. They can fly in one position, or hit speeds of somewhere around 40 mph. I find the mystery of this world to be one of my biggest inspirations in life. Maybe some day I will be able to capture it with equal beauty. I think that's a tall order.

These were all ISO 100, 70mm focal length (which is why my dof is so darned small).
And no flash. f4.5, 1/350s. f4.5, 1/250s. f8, 1/250s. There was just no time to think. I'm actually loving this. What a learning curve. Run inside and there are the instant pictures. But it's harder than riding a unicycle, that's for sure.

7. Great catch, Gregorian! I was able to catch a Buckeye the other day with
a bit of chase and shoot, chase and shoot.
