Where's Blm?
Hey, Democrats, the Truth Matters!
By Robert Parry
May 11, 2006

My book, Secrecy & Privilege, opens with a scene in spring 1994 when a guest at a White House social event asks Bill Clinton why his administration didn’t pursue unresolved scandals from the Reagan-Bush era, such as the Iraqgate secret support for Saddam Hussein’s government and clandestine arms shipments to Iran.

Clinton responds to the questions from the guest, documentary filmmaker Stuart Sender, by saying, in effect, that those historical questions had to take a back seat to Clinton’s domestic agenda and his desire for greater bipartisanship with the Republicans.

Snip...

‘Politicized’ CIA

After winning Election 1992, Clinton also rebuffed appeals from members of the U.S. intelligence community to reverse the Reagan-Bush “politicization” of the CIA’s analytical division by rebuilding the ethos of objective analysis even when it goes against a President’s desires.

Snip...

Clinton’s approach also reflected a lack of appreciation for the importance of truth in a democratic Republic. If the American people are expected to do their part in making sure democracy works, they need to be given at least a chance of being an informed electorate.

Yet, Clinton – and now some pro-Iraq War Democrats – view truth as an expendable trade-off when measured against political tactics or government policies. In reality, accurate information about important events is the lifeblood of democracy.

Though sometimes the truth can hurt, Clinton and the Democrats should understand that covering up the truth can hurt even more. As Clinton’s folly with the Reagan-Bush scandals should have taught, the Democrats may hurt themselves worst of all when helping the Republicans cover up the truth.

2. Some nice Samaritan should buy her a star so she can post in here again
I am flat-ass broke, so I can't, but if anyone had five spare bucks, I think it would be nice to see her pop in here again.

6. Hey gang -
This is such an important article - I hope we can keep it in the mix as long as possible.

Thanks to the samaritan on my star. I feel bad because it wasn't financial reasons that prevented me from renewing my pledge, it was my own laxness. As I rarely shop using a credit card, maybe two or three times a year, I don't carry a card and mr. blm keeps it in his wallet. The problem is getting me, my husband and the credit card all in the room at the same time AND remembering to donate.

I will make up for this by making an extra donation for a new member.

You guys always prove to be amazing human beings - thoughtful to the core.

8. I'm really hoping Pitt sees it and pushes the point further.
This article PROVES this nation needs a president who believes in opening the books and trusting the American people with the MOST information possible, not the least like it has been for so long.

9. So - I guess we should comment on each others' comments
to flip it back up. It really is a very important article. It's amazing how much damage a decision that could have sounded magninimous or generous at the time it was made could do.

10. Repubs don't like it when they blame Clinton for 9-11 and I agree with 'em
and then say exactly WHY - There would have been no 9-11 and no Iraq war if Clinton had opened the books on all the covert crap Bush, his family, and all their cronies were doing for all those years.
