I was, of course, so long winded that no one will really read it. I assumed that many readers would be current college students who have no real view of the 60s. (Although as a baby boomer, it was a jolt to see the protest footage in "Going Upriver" because time softens things.)

Part of what was lost was that there were a huge number of people to the left of Kerry at that point. So, I wrote it for that generation - who may have agreed with Kerry a lot, but through RW nonsense confuse Kerry's position then with the radical left of that day. (It was the radical left that led John Lennon to write the lyrics

"You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You'd better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow " )

It was this type of view that made Lennon want to appear with Kerry. (One of Kerry's Yale roommate's worked on one of Lennon's albums).

Odd that supposedly Norm Coleman was a radical student leader - but the Republicans ignore that.

I'd make sure I always told people that too because that is what happened. It was a "moderate" view in the 60's and people should be told that!

It's dangerous that people think it was because of abortion. He made the stronger, more important - and less politically (and religiously) dangerous abortion argument.

In an odd way it's a blessing that Kerry was monitored so closely by the FBI at that time. There really is a record - that was hostile - that actually exhonerates him.
