On October 30th Congressman John Lewis, a genuine American hero, will lead a march from Roxbury to downtown Boston. This march commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the Selma-Montgomery march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to support voting rights for African Americans, another march he led from Roxbury to Boston Common to protest segregation in Boston’s public schools, and the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This event is also designed to increase awareness and support for the renewal of key provisions of the Voting Rights Act.


I recall as a law clerk to a federal judge in the south traveling to Selma and walking the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, where John Lewis and other heroic leaders marched a decade before. They risked their lives to stand up for voting rights, and John Lewis was severely beaten. Their courage awakened the conscience of America. Forty years later, we owe it to those pioneers -- and to our democracy -- not only to renew the Voting Rights Act but also to make it once again a national priority to expand and protect the right to vote.


That's why I'll be at the First Church at 10 Putnam Street in Roxbury at 1 pm on October 30th to march. If you can join me to show your support for voting rights, please reply to [email protected]
