October 6, 2005
PEOPLE WHO voted for George W. Bush seem a little bit defensive these days, as well they should. It was, to put it as nicely as possible, a poorly informed, confused thing to do. But it's just as poorly informed and confused to blame John Kerry, as more and more mortified Bush voters have been doing. One example is Brian Stowell's Sept. 26 letter (''Kerry's emotional words against Bush came too late").
Kerry never made ''many contradictory statements." That was just a Rovian smear, and Bush himself was self-contradictory on much more important matters.
Well-informed people voted for Kerry; the rest didn't. Granted that the laziness and timidity of the mainstream press made it hard to sort out fact from rumor. John McCain has been the only attractive Republican candidate for the 2008 presidential race. But he tainted himself beyond redemption with his support of the Bush campaign. Rudolph Giuliani's claim to fame was that he didn't go to pieces during Sept. 11. He's a mediocre leader, and he also is tainted by his support of Bush.
There is nothing on the Republican side now for anyone wanting a return to competent, responsible government. Are there any moderate Republicans left? Didn't they all die out or become libertarians 20 years ago?
