Dean criticized from the left
I have tried to minimize unfavorable comments about Dean on LUTD and the Unofficial Kerry Blog, both because, despite the bitter fight over the nomination, I do agree with him on a large number of issues and we are better off with Dean being successful in his current position.

However, after the way Dean falsely characterized Kerry as a pro-war candidate in the primary battle, I couldn't help entering a post on Dean being criticized from some leftists who appear to have just realized Dean is not one of them. The post at LUTD is at:

1. Hah
I got into a bit of a scuffle with some Deanaics here the other day when I tried to point this out to them. They, of course, denied that Dean had ever run as a liberal. Well, slap my ass and call me Sally! You mean those Naderites and pacifists and Greens were throwing their support behind a guy who ran as the centrist he was? :eyes: Yeah, I didn't think so.

6. And still
They got no plan to get out either. Immediate withdrawal? And what aid group will want to go into Iraq after that?

I think there's a way to change the debate on Iraq. And it is that we don't know how to prevent extremism. We can't even prevent it here and the abortion clinic bombings prove it. So how does having an election in Iraq prevent it there?

At least if Democrats were talking about extremist terrorists, we might be moving in the right direction. Nobody seems to want to talk about that anymore.

18. So what is PDA going to do in going after Dean?
Frankly, I think we should focus on the Republicans.

10. Yes, and remember us telling you this, as well?
:hi:

No shock to me that Dean is not an anti-war candidate, although I do remember being told he was.

13. I am frankly amazed it took him this long
I also remember having my ass kicked when I dared suggest that he was not anti-war, nor very liberal.

Anti-PRE-EMPTIVE-war.

11. And today, It's Clark who has said we can't leave Iraq
so they're criticizing the accuracy of the UPI story or to a lesser degree Clark. Kerry's statements asking people not to count Iraq as a success yet and arguing that the diplomacy and the training are way too slow sound better as time goes by. I wonder if there's a point where he will argue we're doing more harm than good and will join Kennedy and Meehan in arguing to get out.

17. I remember Kerry's appearance on MTP the day of the Iraqi elections
when he didn't jump on the "Iraq is a Jeffersonian Democracy - the insurgency is Dead" bandwagon so he was a sore loser. Will he be proven right again, after the fact? Of course.

20. I thought Kerry was very clear and consistent
He had the four things that have to be done before we can withdraw from Iraq. That never changed. I still thing his ideas are sound.

21. I agree. He had a long term view which the media doesn't seem to
be able to deal with since they have the attention span of a gnat.

Important message about the candidate supporters' groups.

The purpose of the new DU Groups is to provide like-minded people with places where they can discuss issues free from disruption from those who disagree. The theory was that if we provided members with "safe zones" where you were not being forced to constantly defend yourselves, you might not feel quite so victimized by DU, and you might not feel the need to be constantly fighting with other people.

We still think the theory is sound. But it appears that it was not perfect. It has already become apparent that providing people with mini echo-chambers can have the opposite effect of what we intended. A few members have taken the candidate supporters' groups as an open invitation to fire up the old primary wars, and focus on the negative rather than the positive. It would be a real shame if these groups served as a catalyst to re-ignite the antagonism from the primary, and we hope everyone will make an effort to keep that from happening.

There is already a lot of great stuff being posted in these candidate groups. We believe that these groups are a good and useful addition to DU. Let's not undermine their purpose by falling back into old habits.

Thank you for doing what you can to make this idea a success.
