Does anybody know why some Dems voted for S.30
The bill Coleman brought as a substitute for the S.5 Embryonic Stem Cell Bill.

This include Kerry, Kennedy, Harkin, and Leahy, all of which are strong proponent of S.5.

I am asking the question because S.30 is more of less unanimously seen by people who lobby for these issues as worse than the statut quo:http://www.stempac.com/.

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00128

The majority of Democrats have voted against it, and the division between those who voted YES and NO does not make any logical sense.

Any clue?

1. Possibly because it was the only bill that could be pased over a veto

I'm not impressed with the STEMPAC post. They say it adds extra restrictions, but don't say what they are or what they are added to - the status quo or to S5. I also don't like throwing around words like "moron" and after all the Imus junk, that is nearly as bad. If it is added to the status quo, I'm with you, it doesn't make things better, but worse if that's possible. If it's to S5, it might be a good compromise.

Kerry gave a floor speech that I missed so maybe it's likely explained there. (I think all 4 Senators are Catholic)

2. Stem Pac is not the only group that called for an opposition of S.30
The problem is that, if the S.5 is vetoed and S.30 is kept, it adds to the status quo.

I listened to Kerry's speech. It is all about S.5, nothing about S.30.

3. He might have thought it was better than nothing
And voted for it as such.

4. I agree
as Kennedy voted for it to. Also last year this same bill passed 100-0.

5. It expands what will be funded
although not by much and not addressing the fundamental issue.

If I understand correctly from the report that was on NPR this morning.

There are some people who will not settle for a slice of bread because they think it reduces their ability to someday get the whole loaf.

Without doing any more research, that is what I sense here.
