Frank Rich conjures up the 1971 John Kerry

In this week's column on our troops being held hostage to the political ambitions of the Republican congress and adminitration, Rich concludes by saying it's time for all of us to ask JK's "how do ask a man" question. A similar point was made in a diary on Huffingtin Post a week or so ago:

If we really support the troops, we’ll move past Mr. Bush’s “fundamental question” to one from 1971 posed by a 27-year-old Vietnam veteran, John Kerry, before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee: “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?”

I just wish that Rich could see that 62 year old John Kerry is the mature version of that brave articulate 27 year old and read his April 22, 2006 speech that connects to the 1971 one.

Maybe he could mention the Kerry/Feingold amendment rather than every other plan that surfaces.

Maybe he will regret all his 2004-2006 snark about windsurfing - a completely legitimate hobby that Kerry spent only a few hours on. I think Rich alone has spent as much time talking and writing about windsurfing in 2004 than Kerry spent windsurfing.
