Lieberman was on the shortlist to replace Rummy.
well, well, well.

http://electioncentral.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2006/oct/02/ct_sen_woodward_lieberman_was_considered_for_defense_secretary

In his new book, State of Denial, Bob Woodward writes that the Bush administration considered Joe Lieberman as a replacement for Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld. In today's excerpt in the Washington Post, Woodward writes of chief of staff Andrew Card: "Card had the names of 11 possible Rumsfeld replacements in his `hit-by-the-bus' book, among them Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.), who had been Al Gore's vice presidential running mate in 2000 and was a staunch defender of the Iraq war, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)." Lieberman has dismissed rumors he was being considered as a "total fantasy." (more...)

I wonder what Lamont will be able to make of this, if anything. Or does it bizarrely play to Lieberman's advantage among "moderates and independents"?

1. I've long suspected
that this was (is) Lieberman's career plan. ..at least until November 2008, when we finally elect a Democratic president.

2. i don't know how this will play out, but this is just bizarre, what in the
world would have qualified Lieberman for this position? Was loyalty to the president all that mattered? I'll tell you my opinion, this makes him look like a suck-up opportunist.

4. He is qualified, no doubt about that. He has been for a very long time

on the Senate Armed Forces Committee (or is it Defense, I cannot remember). Rumsfeld is qualified as well.

If anything, he is OVERQUALIFIED compared to the average Bush nominee. Does that mean that he would propose a good set of policies. This is another issue.

3. I hope Lamont makes something of it. Lieberman is playing on his
seniority to be reelected. If there is a chance that Bush names him in replacement of Rummy or Cherkoff once he will be reelected, whoever would replace him (and it would probably be a Republican) would have as little seniority as Lamont and could be in position to switch the majority from Democrat to Republican.

This is worth exploiting.

5. Agree!
The way Lieberman flipped from being more supportive of the illegal war than most Republicans, to trying to convince voters otherwise since losing, he needs to be questioned about this.
