favorite 0.22 LR cartridge?

What is your prefered 22 round and how do you shoot it? (i.e. hunting, target etc., revolver, 10/22 etc.)

Someone gave me two boxes of UMC 40gr. .22LR high velocity with a lubricated, but not coppered lead round nose. The projectiles are black in color. Anyone know if there is a present day equivilent as it seems they are out of production.

Anyway, my prefered round is the CCI Minimag 40 gr. HV copper gilded round nose. I just do target shooting and I use a Remmington 504 rifle or one of several hand guns. It is clean and consistent.

1. I want a .22

I'd love to have one of those 9- or 10-shot .22 revolvers, just to have one. I've also heard good things about Ruger 10/22's, but the Marlin Model 60 is also appealing, though I like detachable mags. I did used to have a North American Arms mini-revolver in .22LR (neat), but sold it to get a Mosin-Nagant.

When I learned to shoot as a teenager using my dad's Ruger .22, I seem to recall liking Federal Lightning as far as standard-velocity rounds go. With the NAA, I liked CCI Stinger (which is surprisingly loud from a 1" barrel...)

2. Marlin Model 60's!

They are addicting and they keep following me home from local gun shops.

I have three so far. A 1978, a 1982 Glenfield and a 2006 stainless model with a composite stock.

The first two cost me $60 and $75 respectively in very good shape with the original boxes. Pretty much closet queens. The stainless was brand new and only cost $125. Cheap thrills for sure.

I finally found a round they all love, Federal Auto Match. Comes in a Bulk Pack of 325 round for around $9 at Wally World or other mass merchandisers..

Easy to take down and clean, grooved for a scope. Depending on the year the tube holds from 15 to 18 rounds and an 8 tube x 15 round "speedloder" for it is only $18.. A Simmons 22 Mag scope for it 3 - 9 x 40 is only about $25 with rings included.

Not as many "dress up toys" for them as for a 10/22. But, if I really want to shoot a zoomy looking rifle with a protruding pistol grip, I'll take my AR or my "M4gery" to the range.

3. I think Remington's 'Thunderbolt' is the same th8ing

Lead round nose with a bit of a point to it, high-velocity 40-grain bullet.

It's what I keep in my .22 pistol for emergencies, at least until I get a real handgun.

and I think you're right, it was Remington. They sold boxes and bricks, but also sold it by the can, as I recall.

6. I like Wolf Match Target

Subsonic, maybe too low-powered for hunting. Too low-powered to cycle a semi-auto ruger 45/22 pistol.

But from my bolt gun, it shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards with good iron sights, and a good shooter could probably do better. With optics on the gun, the groups are about 1.5" at 100 yards.

Bolt gun is an old surplus Remington 40-X.

7. My old "sears ted williams" .22 won't shoot anymore.

The ejector is broken on it, so every fired shot means a jam to clear. No fun at all.

I bought a Marlin 917v (17hmr bolt), and its a tackdriver. Fun little rifle to plink with but not inexpensive like the 22 was.
