The day the Earth Stood Still

I got this movie on DVD as a gift. Included on the DVD is a 70min commentary that for the most part I didn't find that interesting...at least not 70 mins worth of interesting.

But they did mention something I'm curious about. Apparently the Producers got some grief about casting Sam Jaffe as Prof Barnhardt. This was 1951, and one of the people interviewed said Mr Jaffe was a "Liberal Republican".

Anyone know more about this story?

BTW: Another interesting point was that the DoD did not let them use any military equipment. They had to go to the Virginia National Guard. Apparently the DoD wasn't comfortable with the message of the movie.
