I just want to say 'thank you'.
Several of you have come into our group to express you condolences to us, and I deeply apreciate it; it is good to be reminded that atheists are, above all, compassionate people. That which divides us is much smaller than that which unites us.

Peace be with you all.

4. I'd like to echo that
This will be a terrible loss for all practicing Catholics.

7. I'm very sorry for your loss
No matter what one's beliefs are, we are seeing the end of an era right now. To many on DU, he is the only Pope of their lifetimes.

16. I feel old, too. More so, than you, I fear.
This really takes me back, which may be part of the reason I identify with what's happening, now, though I do think that this Pope was a remarkable man. I remember, when I was a little kid, and Pope John XXIII was on his deathbed. I had to go to bed, but my babysitter was a high school student at the local Catholic school, and she watched the late news, and left me a note, about how he was doing, since I must have been very concerned.

9. He's the only one either of us have ever known.
It will take time to get used to someone else.

11. Hello, Padraig18, I want to express my condolences, as well.
I may be lapsed, but I would never bash anyone who is fortunate enough to have retained his beliefs, like you and my good friend, Kleeb. And I feel bad, personally, about the passing of the Pope. For one thing, I am Polish, as well as Irish-American. He was a great man and brought so many people together. He made history! I am so very sorry to see him leave us.

Peace to you.

13. You're welcome, anytime.
This was just a remarkable man, no matter where you stand on religion. Karol Wojtyla fought the Nazis and the Communists, was a champion skier and a playwright. And, as Pope, brought so many people together, and visited places no previous pope ever dared visit before. He was a truly amazing figure and I also mourn his passing. And he was also Polish. Thanks, John.:-)

14. Thanks
He was one of the best I think, I wish he had been more social liberal but when it came to healing international rifts, there was no one better I think in ercent years.

15. You're welcome. And you're absolutely right.
He visited so many places, more than any other Pope, and brought people together, like Cuba! Amazing! This man absolutely made history. But you're also right in that he was not socially liberal, something that probably put a lot of people off. But he still did a lot of good, which is not something most people can say.:-)
