New Book: The Atheist's Guide to Christmas
http://www.examiner.com/x-8947-LA-Atheism-Examiner~y2009m9d26-The-Atheists-Guide-to-Christmas

The Atheist's Guide to Christmas is an anthology of humorous anecdotes, stories and tips on how to enjoy Christmas by 42 British atheist comedians, scientists, philosophers and writers. It is edited by Ariane Sherine, a UK comedy writer, journalist and founder of the Atheist Bus Campaign. It's scheduled to be on the bookshelves in Britain on October 1st, but the pre-release version has just been made available through Amazon UK. The book is divided into six sections: Stories, Arts, Science, Philosophy, How To and Events. According to Ariane, "It’s funny, thoughtful and hopefully quite beautiful in places, and also contains quotes from great atheists throughout history." Participating writers include Richard Dawkins, Charlie Brooker, Ben Goldacre, Jenny Colgan, David Baddiel, Simon Singh, AC Grayling, Robin Ince, Brian Cox and Richard Herring.

Copies can be ordered through Amazon UK or Amazon USA. The full advance and all proceeds from the book are going to the UK HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust.

Richard Dawkins contribution to the book - bunch of pompous nonsense IMO, Dawkins, that is.

3. Atheist's Guide to Christmas

Bess writes: Here’s a seasonal book for the non-believer – The Atheist’s Guide to Christmas, billed as the first atheist charity book (royalties go to the Terrence Higgins Trust). Featuring essays from Richard Dawkins, Simon le Bon, David Baddiel, AC Grayling, Derren Brown and Claire Rayner, the book has been put together by Guardian journalist Ariane Sherine, interviewed here in The Scotsman. Last year she launched the Atheist Bus Campaign, and raised more than £150,000 to place the advert “There’s no God, Now stop worrying and enjoy you life’ on 800 UK buses in January 29. I haven’t seen the book but am told it includes accounts of an atheist Christmas miracle. Natalie Haynes, writing about the book a couple of month’s earlier dubbed it a gardening manual for Atheists.

4. You did get that the Dawkins piece is a P. G. Wodehouse parody, didn't you?
Or perhaps a homage to Wodehouse.

6. P. G. Wodehouse
Very popular English humor writer, starting before WWII. Very popular in the U.S., as well. Among his most popular fiction were stories about a brainless but good-natured upper-class twit, Bertie Wooster, and his brilliant butler, Jeeves, who stays in the background but manages Bertie's life completely. The dialog in that Dawkins piece is a pretty good imitation of the deliberately overdone speaking style Wodehouse used for those characters.
