"Argumentum ad Boogeyman"
Definition: A logical fallacy which holds that if you do not agree with the speaker, some "evil other" will eat you.

Thoughts?

(I could not find a Philosophy group, and all of the Atheists of my aquaintance are pretty knowledgeable about logical fallacys... it's part of having to deal with hostile theists all the time, is my guess.) :hi:

1. hmm - dunno, TechBear. It sounds an awful lot like
an appeal to fear.

example:
"You must believe that God exists. After all, if you do not accept the existence of God, then you will face the horrors of hell."
from here:
http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/appeal-to-fear.html

But I like it!!

booga booga booga!! HAH!

2. Aha! That helped me find the correct name
Appeal to fear, aka argumentum in terrorem. What an appealing name. :toast:

I still like my version, though.

9. Me too, TechBear!
I think it tops my all-time favourite - Loki's Wager.
It sums up the Bush presidency very well . . .

5. Whenever I get that one (usually from fundies)
I just ask if they're going to end up there. Naturally they answer "No!". Then I tell them I'll gladly go to hell.

4. "Argumentum ex Rectum"
The definition should be obvious. Seen all the time in R/T and Health.

7. Eg Gillian McKeith
She talks endlessly about chlorophyll, for example: how it's "high in oxygen" and will "oxygenate your blood" - but chlorophyll will only make oxygen in the presence of light. It's dark in your intestines, and even if you stuck a searchlight up your bum to prove a point, you probably wouldn't absorb much oxygen in there, because you don't have gills in your gut. In fact, neither do fish. In fact, forgive me, but I don't think you really want oxygen up there, because methane fart gas mixed with oxygen is a potentially explosive combination.

8. I love Dr Ben!
You've got to love a skeptical doctor who claims one of his proudest achievements is getting the words "shit head" and "fuck yourself" into the British Medical Journal!
