BTK: What needs to be said.
Once again, we see that a fine, upstanding leader in the religious community has a horrible secret life. Double whammy that he was a boy scout leader, what with their hatred of the "immorality" of gays and atheists.

We are told time and again, even by some on DU, that atheism is a problem. That without the moral foundation of a religion, humans will lose all sight of that which is good and right. That indeed, without religion, one could not possibly be moral.

BTK: Yet another counter-example for them to ignore. As if the millions so far weren't enough...

Didn't want to be accused of generalizing and of course we shouldn't. But you're right we can not ignore the fact that being a member of a religon is not evidence of being above the rest of humanity.

Great line from the Howard Stern show yesterday while they were talking about this guy, I think Arte Lang said it, "Why don't we just round up all these Boy Scout leaders who are active in their church right now."

Something to that affect. :)

2. I think the only generalization here...
is that people can be horrible to one another, and "having religion" has nothing to do with morality.

In fact, in many cases, it can be a hindrance to it.

4. Professions with similar access to vulnerable children
(for instance, teachers, nannies, doctors, social workers, domestic staff) have shrinkingly small levels of child abuse compared with religion-related professions.

5. Fascinating. I had never heard that before.
Was there a study done on this, or is it just out of the normal crime statistics?

6. Pederasts know they can become Catholic priests &rape kids with no penalty
The Church hierarchy will protect them. All you have to do is learn Latin and all the other necessary training.
