I am watching his acceptance speech on CSPAN, and he said something like, 'I am glad we have agreed that we can all move forward together with GOd, regardless of party, in a nonpartisan way' - something close to that, or meaning basically that.

WTF?!?!?!

1. The man is a politician. He needs VOTES.
That's really not so complicated, is it?

2. Exactly. He'd be all for the Establishment Clause ...
..if he sensed it was an Agnostic crowd.

This is part of that "We need to bring the Church People back under our Big Tent" strategy we keep hearing about while the "moderate Progressives" try to nail us up in the closet....

3. Ya know it is entirely possible to give props to the god crowd
and still acknowledge the rest of us. There is this lovely tool in the English language called a conjunction. The word 'and' allows us to connect ideas and groups together.

4. But, religious politicians make the assumption
that everyone is a believer. To most Christians, it is almost unfathomable that there even exist atheists who don't believe their religious mumbo-jumbo. They're like ostrich's with their heads in the sand.

6. I've thought for a long time
that a coalition could be built between progressive believers and non-believers, since the two groups have much in common and could probably do a lot of good, particularly on social justice issues.

It's been done before -- the gay community has gotten a larger voice, though we don't like to talk about those Log Cabin Republicans. It won't happen, though -- the coalition -- unless the party bigwigs feel it's worthwhile. I actually thought the lobbyist, on atheist issues, was a good start for you folks, since lobbyists are known for walking the political walk.

And, in a coalition, both sides have to resign themselves to the fact that they will not get everything they want. Case in point: I've heard a few fundies complain that George Bush has not gone far enough (I'm not making that up) and a few businessmen complain that he still has not cut taxes in a way that suits them.

But the Rwing coalition has held up -- so far. Too bad (for them) they hitched their wagon to a boob like Bush.
