With the 2008 defense authorization bill, Congress is allowing the Air Force to grant its first master’s degree.
The degree, a master’s of science in flight-test engineering, will be conferred by Air University to graduates of the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
A Senate amendment to the authorization bill aimed to offer even more Air Force degrees — such as a strategic studies doctorate and a master’s in air, space and cyberspace studies . But the House of Representatives offered no similar provision, and the measure failed.
The $506.9 billion defense bill was approved Dec. 6 by the House and Senate Armed Services committees and is expected to be passed by the full Congress in mid-December. Though the bill guides policy and approves expenditures, it does not directly provide money. Funds are provided through the defense appropriations bill, which Congress passed in November.
