The Navy is looking for a handful of lieutenants and lieutenant commanders to spend a week as tour guides for high school students visiting Washington, D.C., this spring.This March, 104 high school students from around the country will participate in the Senate’s annual United States Senate Youth Program. The Navy will select five lieutenants and three lieutenant commanders to act as “counselors, facilitators and ambassadors of the armed forces,” according to an administrative message issued Nov. 26 by Vice Adm. John Stufflebeem, director of Navy staff. Two additional lieutenant commanders will be selected to serve as the “senior escort officer” and “assistant senior escort officer,” the message says.
Officers selected to escort students must be “career-oriented, present exemplary personal and professional appearance, be familiar with the responsibilities of the Senate and be well-versed in federal government and department of the Navy current events,” the memo states.
Applications are due Jan. 11, 2008. Participation in the program is voluntary and the selected officers must possess no-cost orders.
Applications must include a brief description of current and previous assignments, list of combat or deployment experience, a one-page biography including experience working with youth, a recommendation from his/her commanding officer and a full-length photograph.
Those selected are required to be available from Feb. 28 to March 8, according to the message.
