Rosetta Stone, the computer-based language immersion program offered free to soldiers, has developed a new version of its Arabic language course for the Army.
The new study course has a military focus that includes 123 military terms and puts an emphasis on military language tasks such as talking with civilians at a vehicle checkpoint, reacting to a roadside bomb incident or training Arabic-speaking soldiers.
The new Arabic Military version, which is available online exclusively, was released Nov. 19 via Army e-Learning on the Army Knowledge Online Web site, according to a press release.
Rosetta Stone on-demand foreign language training is available at no cost to all active Army, National Guard, Reserve and Department of the Army civilian personnel worldwide, through Army e-Learning, the latest component of the Army’s Distributed Learning System, a product under the Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems.
Units preparing to deploy overseas have taken advantage of the Web-based foreign language instruction through Rosetta Stone since November 2005.
During that time, approximately 115,000 soldiers have spent 600,000 hours studying Rosetta Stone’s 30 languages. In just the three languages related to Iraq and Afghanistan — Arabic, Farsi, and Pashto — soldiers have completed 90,000 hours of language training, according to an Army press release.
