The Marine Corps hit the mark with recruit numbers in October, defense officials said Tuesday.
The Corps sent 2,788 active-duty Marine hopefuls to its recruit depots in San Diego and Parris Island, S.C., surpassing its goal by 2 percent. Recruiters had 890 Reserve accessions, meeting that goal.
The other services also met or exceeded their October recruiting goals.
Despite meeting or even surpassing retention goals, defense officials have acknowledged the challenge of recruiting and retaining manpower during the protracted war in Iraq.
Support of potential recruits’ “influencers” — friends and family — has receded over the past five years, David S.C. Chu, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, said last month. “I think the big challenge to us is that if influencer attitudes go south again in a major way, we will have trouble here,” he said.Article at:
