Engine repair work consolidates at Tinker
Engine repair work consolidates at Tinker
Staff report
Posted : Friday Nov 2, 2007 6:14:41 EDT

Within a year, Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., will be doing work on the engines that power F-15s, F-16s, B-1Bs, B-52Hs and a host of aircraft based on the C-135 airframe.

The move is part of the effort to consolidate intermediate engine repair at about six locations worldwide, down from 38 intermediate engine repair shops now open. Tinker already handles the more complicated depot-level repairs and inspections to many engine models.

Under this Air Force plan, if an engine needs to be pulled off a jet and overhauled, instead of doing the work at the wing level, the engine will be shipped to one of the half-dozen consolidated repair shops, like the new shop at Tinker’s Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center.

Two weeks ago, the intermediate shop at Tinker’s 545th Propulsion Maintenance Squadron achieved “fully operational status.” The shop specializes in repairs of the TF33 engine, the power plant on B-52Hs, KC-135s and many other large jets.

By October 2008, the shop will also be repairing F101 engines that power B-1B Lancer bombers and the F100 and F110-100 engines that power F-15 Eagles and F-16 Falcons. About 650 engines annually will go through Tinker’s intermediate shop.
