No Capitol Ceremony For World War I Vet

By Billy House

Thursday, March 3, 2011 | 2:46 p.m.
House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, wants to honor Frank Buckles -- the last surviving World War I veteran until his death on Sunday at age 110 –- in a special ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, but not in the Capitol, as suggested by some other lawmakers.

Boehner's office said the speaker had no plans to allow Buckles’ body to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, as some lawmakers from Buckles’ home state of West Virginia have proposed.

“The speaker intends to ask Secretary Gates to allow Mr. Buckles’ family to use the amphitheater at Arlington cemetery for his memorial service,” said Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said today

1. I'm sure Mr Buckles would be thrilled to be honored at
Arlington National Cemetery.

I don't know why this is even an issue.

2. This is How We Honor Our Last World War I Veteran?
According to the National Journal, Speaker of the House John Boehner has nixed plans for Frank Buckle’s body to lie in state under the Capitol Rotunda to honor and memorialize this last U.S. veteran of World War I who died early last Sunday (Feb 27) at age 110. Mr. Buckles was the last living link with the service and sacrifice of nearly five million American Veterans who served during World War I and helped the U.S. come of age as a world power during the 20th century. They fought for freedom and country, not for money or glory, and returned to a nation that offered little in the way of veterans’ benefits. Is it too much to pay them their due by honoring and memorializing Mr. Buckles at our nation’s Capitol? I know America’s veterans don’t think so and you can let Speaker Boehner know that by emailing him.

The White House ordered the Army to provide Mr. Buckles a burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery (now scheduled for March 15) but the Buckles family points out that the cemetery cannot handle the volume of visitors who want to honor Buckles in person. Veterans organizations, schools, war re-enactors and thousands of others have deluged the Buckles family with requests to attend services for the nation’s last Doughboy and the Capitol Rotunda is the right place for that to happen.

3. The Battle in DC Concerning Honoring the Last Survivor of WW1 Is Not Over
FACEBOOK PAGES ARE UNITING ALL VETERANS AND CITIZENS STANDING FIRM FOR CAPITOL ROTUNDA HONORS REPRESENTING ALL WW1 VETERANS
The battle is still going strong in DC to make this happen to have Frank Buckles to lay in state in Capitol Rotunda. A March on DC is now being organized. Former Senator Bob Dole has stepped forward as of yesterday to make this happen. Veterans and Supporters are urged to keep the email, faxes, and phone call to DC targeting Speaker of House and Majority Leader Reid in Senate. It is just wrong not to honor the last survivor of any war that would be representing all others that died from a group ie World War 1 or any war re WW2, Korea, Vietnam etc. This is not an occurrence that happens that often!

To Honor Rosa Parks but not to honor our Veterans is a slap in the face of every Veteran that Ever Served! It is after all the House and Senate and their votes that send us to War! Please all keep the phone calls, emails, and faxes going, this is a war we can and must win! A war of Recognition and Proper Honors.

Here is the latest to join in the battle:

How will they send off the Last Doughboy?
Some want Frank Buckles to lie in repose in the Capitol as an honor to all who served in WWI.
