A Camp Lejeune Marine was killed Nov. 13 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, according to his family.

The family of Lance Cpl. Shawn P. Hefner, 22, of Hico, Texas, told Fox 4 News in Dallas that Hefner was on foot patrol in Helmand province when he triggered the IED, killing him instantly.

Hefner, an assault amphibious vehicle crewman with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, had been in Afghanistan since June, according to a II Marine Expeditionary Force release. He joined the Corps in January 2008.
