Corps IDs Marine found dead outside home
Corps IDs Marine found dead outside home
Staff report
Posted : Wednesday Oct 28, 2009 21:27:59 EDT

Marine officials and San Diego County sheriffs are investigating the suspected suicide of a lance corporal found hanging outside his home Monday night in Fallbrook, Calif.

Officials identified the Marine as Lance Cpl. Joseph L. Favela, 20, a field artillery cannoneer with Camp Pendleton’s 1st Battalion, 11th Marines.

Favela’s wife found her husband hanging from a porch rafter at their home just southeast of the base. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene but unable to revive him.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Favela died of asphyxiation by hanging, Marine officials said.

Favela, of Robstown, Texas, enlisted March 20, 2008. He was assigned to 1/11’s Charlie Company since last year, but he had not deployed.

1. was he set to deploy? if it is suicide, how many does that make this year alone?
was just reading amy goodman's piece about how the families of military members who commit suicide do NOT receive letters of condolence. and just heard this morning that a soldier here shot himself to avoid going back.

such a sad, pointless waste.

2. The 'official' count is around 120 per year but I'm sure that is way short of
reality.
