Carrier H.W. Bush returns from sea trials

NORFOLK, Va. — The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush has completed sea trials.

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding says the $6.3 billion ship returned Monday after the contractor tested the carrier’s systems, components and compartments for the first time.

Ken Mahler, Northrop Grumman’s vice president of Navy programs, says the carrier should be on track to be delivered to the Navy in the spring, after a few tweaks.

Operational training for the aircraft carrier is set for late this year and operational deployment beginning in 2010.
