McGuire biofuel project gets defense funds

WASHINGTON — An alternative energy project that would use biofuels to produce power for New Jersey’s McGuire Air Force Base is getting $3.2 million in defense funding.

Reps. Rob Andrews, D-N.J., and John Adler, D-N.J., announced Thursday the money for the project involving McGuire and the Stevens Institute of Technology that they said could generate 350 jobs within a few years.

Waste material would be converted into synthetic gas. Officials say the energy generated would power up to 40 homes with water vapor as the only by-product.

Andrews says the project plants a seed that will produce jobs. The military wants to generate at least 25 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2025.
