Fairchild rec center roof collapses under snow

The roof of a building at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., collapsed Tuesday under the weight of record snowfalls that have fallen there.

No one was injured when a 100-by-100-foot section of a recreation center roof collapsed about 7 a.m., according to a base press release. The affected section of the building was unoccupied at the time.

The base fire department responded and evacuated other parts of the building, according to the press release, and utilities and boilers in the building were shut off as a precaution.

The building is from the World War II era, according to a base spokeswoman.

Officials are checking other buildings on base to make sure there is no risk of collapses.
