Patrick airmen deploy to Afghanistan

PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — A day after tears and pride mixed on Patrick Air Force Base in Melbourne as families saw off reserves leaving for Afghanistan, another group is expected home to smiles.

Reserve airmen from the 920th Rescue Wing left Sunday to Afghanistan. They will support the Army’s medical evacuations there. Eighty airmen deployed over a 4-day stretch over Christmas weekend.

The airmen who left over the weekend will replace a similar-sized team of airmen who will return Monday afternoon to Patrick Air Force Base.

This deployment begins the final leg of the 14-month rotation for the 920th Rescue Wing’s medical evacuation mission in Afghanistan. The airmen are more accustomed to rescuing downed pilots and other troops isolated in combat behind enemy lines.
