CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A former Kubasaki High School teacher was indicted by a Kentucky grand jury Monday on charges of sodomy and rape.

According to a story published by the Lexington Herald-Leader, Jack Russell Hubbard, 61, remains free on bond pending a court date. His passport was revoked as a condition of his bond.

The charges stem from sexual abuse allegations made by two students dating back to the late 1970s when Hubbard was a science teacher in Fayette County. The indictments include four charges of first-degree sodomy and one count of first-degree rape. They involve one female and one male student.

The charges originated from a high-profile sex abuse lawsuit filed by a former student, Carol Lynne Maner, against the Fayette County School Board in 2007. She accused the board of ignoring reports that Hubbard and several other teachers and administrators in the school district sexually abused students in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A jury awarded her $3.7 million. An appeal by the school board is pending.
