SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah environmental official says an attempt to burn off jet fuel from two F-16 tanks jettisoned over the Great Salt Lake has failed.

J.D. Keetley, with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality’s emergency response branch, says crews tried to ignite the fuel Tuesday morning but efforts were hampered by wet conditions.

The pilot dropped the tanks Friday onto a mud flat about three miles north of Antelope Island after the plane’s sensors indicated a fire shortly after take off. The pilot landed safely.

Hill Air Force Base officials are working with local, state and federal officials about what should happen next.

Keetley says one option may be to simply dig out the fuel and soil at the site and either burn it or dispose of it elsewhere.
