Missing Marine returned to Corps

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A Camp Pendleton Marine who deserted two years ago but was arrested last week after boarding a private airplane is back in military custody.

Lance Cpl. Lance Hering, 23, was brought to Camp Pendleton, Calif., on Saturday night and was placed in the base brig, base spokeswoman Maj. Kristen Lasica told the Peninsula (Wash.) Daily News.

Hering was a member of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines when he disappeared Aug. 30, 2006, in what a friend told authorities was a climbing accident in Boulder County, Colo. The story turned out to be a hoax, however, and Hering was listed as a deserter.

Colorado authorities received tips in recent months that Hering was spotted at Olympic National Park in Washington state. Acting on a tip, authorities arrested the Marine and his father, Lloyd Hering, at the Port Angeles, Wash., airport on Nov. 16 as they prepared to board a Cessna airplane piloted by the father, a licensed pilot.

Late last week, Lance Hering fought extradition to Colorado, where two arrest warrants are pending in connection with the hoax and with a probation violation on a burglary charge.
