The more than 700 sailors in the postal clerk rating will soon have better advancement opportunity and a greater variety of duty stations — and all it will cost them is a bit of studying.

That’s because on Oct. 1, PCs will merge with the nearly 8,500-strong storekeeper community to form a new rating called logistics specialist.

The merger will be toughest on PCs in the petty officer ranks, since they will have to study the details of the SK rating in order to advance. SKs, on the other hand, will only need to learn the basics of postal work, as only a few postal-related questions are expected to appear on LS advancement exams.

The move also will open more postal billets for SKs, who will be getting special training to run shipboard post offices.

The move was approved by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead and announced Nov. 17 in NavAdmin message 326/08.
