CIA Air Force gen. nominated for 3rd star

The Air Force’s top general at the Central Intelligence Agency is in line for a promotion.

Maj. Gen. Mark A. Welsh III was nominated for his third star by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Welsh serves as associate director for military support at the CIA. If Welsh is approved by the Senate for his third star he will change titles, becoming the associate director of CIA for military support/associate director for military affairs.

Welsh spent much of his career as a fighter pilot in A-10s and F-16, including command of the 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. He also served as vice commander of Air Education and Training Command and commandant of cadets at the Air Force Academy.
