Preliminary design renderings of the
$300 million National Museum of the Army to be built at Fort Belvoir, Va., have been released by the New York architecture and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM).
Construction of the public and private partnership project is scheduled to begin in 2010, with the museum opening in 2013.
SOM is one of two major design contractors for the museum, the other being Christopher Chadbourne & Associates of Boston, which will oversee the planning, design and fabrication of the museum’s galleries and exhibits.
SOM has an international reputation for large projects, having designed the Sears Tower and John Hancock Center in Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, and the Infinity Tower in Dubai.
CCA is known for creative designs that mesh high-technology and interactivity to give visitors a memorable museum experience, such as those it has created at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Reynolds Museum at Mount Vernon and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
