Soldier Sentenced for Brutal Assault

A Pierce County judge sentenced an Iraq war veteran Friday to 25 years in prison for savagely assaulting his 2-month-old daughter.

The sentence for William Francis Wasageshik was more than twice as long as the high end of the standard range. Superior Court Judge Susan Serko said the exceptional sentence was justified because Wasageshik's daughter was especially vulnerable because of her age.

"Her father betrayed her," Serko said before announcing the sentence.

A jury convicted Wasageshik of two counts of first-degree child assault last month.

Prosecutors had contended that the Fort Lewis soldier inflicted injuries including a fractured skull, three fractured ribs, a broken arm and a spinal cord injury on the child in September 2006.
