Iowa Guard activated for flood relief

Almost 650 Iowa National Guard soldiers and airmen are supporting flood relief operations across the state, according to a press release.

More than 40 Iowa counties have been declared state disaster areas, and many of the state’s lakes, rivers and streams are at near-record levels, flooding local communities and forcing many residents out of their homes. Security concerns are heightened because of thunderstorms forecasted to hit Iowa during the week.

The 640 soldiers and airmen activated for this mission have worked with federal, state, county and local authorities. They are tasked to provide generators for electricity and emergency water supplies, conduct sandbagging and transportation operations, secure bridges and run security control points along major roadways.
