Trial date set in Malmstrom airman shooting

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — An Aug. 18 trial date has been set in the case of a Malmstrom Air Force Base airman who is charged with negligent homicide in the shooting death of another airman.

Jonathon Higgins is accused of shooting 20-year-old John Howry at a backyard party in Great Falls on May 5.

Witnesses said the two men appeared to be joking when Higgins pointed a gun at Howry and fired.

Higgins is free on $25,000 bail.

Malmstrom issued a statement Thursday saying the military maintains a presumption of innocence when Air Force members have been accused of a crime.
