O-4 sentenced to 60 days in adultery case
O-4 sentenced to 60 days in adultery case

A Navy supply officer was sentenced Saturday to 60 days in jail and fined two months pay after a military jury found that she had a sexual relationship with a married lieutenant junior grade and lied about it to her superiors.

After deliberating for approximately two hours, five captains and three commanders found Lt. Cmdr. Syneeda Penland guilty of adultery, conduct unbecoming an officer, making a false official statement and failing to obey a lawful order.

Penland, 36, was taken to the brig immediately after her sentence was announced.

“It was very surprising to see an officer given jail time for purely military offenses,” her defense lawyer, Marine Capt. Patrick Callahan, said Sunday, adding that it was also unusual to see the case taken to a general court-martial, where a conviction is equivalent to a felony conviction in civilian courts. “These are things where if she was working at the local Sears, she would have been called into the office and yelled at, and at worse, fired.”

A Navy prosecutor did not return calls requesting comment on the case.

1. That's just plain nucking futs
But, it seems to be a growing trend in the military.

At some point -- sooner, I hope, than later -- these sex-based prosecutions and courts-martial are going to boil over. Reading the whole article shows that it is an even-more outrageous case than the excerpt can capture. It appears that Lcdr. Penland was spied on, sexually harassed, and retaliated against for properly fulfilling her commission.

In eight short years, a frighteningly large chunk of the brass has developed a petty mindset it has not had since December 6th, 1941. But the power brokers are playing with fire this time. The Conservative/Bush faction has cultivated a lot of ill-will, and Air Force officer training was nearly taken down over just the issue of Christian proselytizing. At some point, they're going to chuck the wrong person in the brig/stockade, and it's Katie-bar-the-door -- sooner, I hope, than later.

2. something doesn't smell right
she was given jail and he got a good fitness report. All the evidence was a blurred photo and an email. This is terrible. She's a whistle blower and getting screwed.
