Nearly two months later, the puppy video is still under investigation.
Officials at Marine Corps Base Hawaii issued a written statement Monday saying the Corps is continuing efforts to “confirm its authenticity and the persons responsible for the video.”
Corps officials reiterated previous statements saying the video, which first circulated across the Internet on March 3, is “appalling, deplorable and contrary to the high standards we expect of every Marine at home and abroad.”
The video depicted a young man wearing Marine Corps combat gear joking with a buddy as he tosses the puppy off a cliff, where it smashes against a rock-strewn desert landscape.
A 22-year-old lance corporal from the Seattle area was named in several online postings as the “puppy killer” and accused of being a “sociopath.” A home address for the Marine was posted on several sites, with at least one posting urging readers to “make him pay.”
