600 turn out to oppose Va. landing field plan

COURTLAND, Va. — More than 600 Southside residents turned out to plan formal opposition against the Navy’s proposal to build a practice landing field for jets from two bases in Virginia and North Carolina.

Barry Steinberg, a lawyer hired by Sussex, Surry and Southampton counties, told the crowd Wednesday night that he would question all aspects of the Navy’s plan. He said a new generation of Navy jets could render an airfield obsolete before it is completed.

The field would be used for jets from Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

The Navy is considering three sites in Virginia and two in North Carolina. Two of the Virginia sites would straddle the line between Sussex and Southampton and the third would be in Surry near Prince George County.
