$7,000 stolen from chapel at Mildenhall

RAF MILDENHALL, England — Air Force investigators are still searching for the thief — or thieves — who stole some $7,000 in cash and checks from the base chapel last month, a spokesman said Friday.

The heist took place during the night of Jan. 27 while the chapel was closed, said Mildenhall spokesman Master Sgt. Charles Tubbs. It is unclear whether the building was entered by force.

Tubbs also said the Air Force Office of Special Investigations would not disclose if it was looking for one or multiple suspects.

Besides a safe containing $1,865 in cash, $4,723 in checks and 297 British pounds, nothing else in the sanctuary was stolen or disturbed.

“It’s hard to believe something like this happened,” said Maj. Patrick Beck, interim chaplain for the 100th Air Refueling Wing at Mildenhall. “I’ve been a chaplain for 18 years and (have) never seen something like this.”
