Editorial: Pentagon must demand integrity from charity

It’s becoming clear that America Supports You, a Defense Department charitable program that supports troops and their families, needs tighter oversight.

Concerns have emerged over how the program deals with the many groups under its banner and in its own internal operations.

When the Pentagon launched America Supports You in 2004, it was designed mainly as a focal point for the many charitable groups eager to help support the troops in wartime.

Since then, ASY has grown by leaps and bounds, with hundreds of groups now listed on its Web site. But Pentagon officials admit they do little to vet the groups that seek entry into the campaign.

In fact, the Web site goes to some lengths to distance the Pentagon from the groups listed. Disclaimers say the Defense Department does not endorse any of the groups and does not vouch for any of the information found on the Web sites of those groups.

uhc comment: In addition to America Supports You, two charities were also mentioned: Coalition to Support America’s Heroes and Help Hospitalized Veterans.
