ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for a Fort Campbell soldier accused in the murder of two women in central Kentucky last year.

Sgt. Brent Burke pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday in Hardin County. The military police officer is accused of killing his estranged wife, 31-year-old Tracy Burke, and her former mother-in-law, 53-year-old Karen Comer, in Comer’s Rineyville home.

Burke’s lawyer told WHAS-TV of Louisville that the defense plans to challenge Burke’s 4-year-old son’s ability to tell the truth when he told a social worker that “Daddy shot Mommy.” The lawyer says he may also seek a change of venue.

Another hearing will be held in April.

Tracy Burke’s three children were in the house at the time of the shootings last September.
