I wrote this, because I believe the Republicans are trying manipulate the black vote based on social issues and I wanted the black ministers who support them to know this. If you have any that you think should be added please says so.
I am addressing this letter to several of you who have endorsed Republican candidates and previously George W. Bush.
I realize you support Republican ideas on social issues, such as abortion and gay marriage. I think it is highly unwise to support the right-wing cause based on one or more social issues, because the economic policy of the right-wing is detrimental to members of the lower income community some of you have in your congregation. There have been recent efforts to dismantle Social Security, which seniors rely on for survival and cuts in food stamps vital to low income families survival. Next, the President’s need to outsource jobs to foreign countries could present a devastating effect on already impoverished areas that may include several members of your congregation Plus, their civil rights record leaves a lot to be desired, as well do issues with diversity.
The recent anti-immigrant debate shows an underlying xenophobic and racist attitude within the party (I am against illegal immigration; I am just pointing out an element of the debate I think is wrong). And lets not forget the blatant disenfranchisement of black voters in the 2000 election. Not to mention the various violations of the law and corruption by the current administration. And the last and possibly most important element of my argument is the Iraq war that was based on false information that has caused more than 2000 soldiers to needlessly lose their lives.
More important to the argument I am making is this. The Republican Party and their cohorts are looking to manipulate people by talking up social issues and hiding their detrimental positions on various other issues. They are at a point where they are desperate to hold on to power and need more votes for the upcoming midterm election. Before you endorse any more Republicans for office, please think about the possible repercussions such as another needless war, more cuts in aid for the poor and more outsourcing of jobs.
And be advised that support for the mentioned party does not bode well with some. I have talked to several people who have been disappointed in hearing that some ministers who have endorsed Republicans and some have even stopped watching telecast by these ministers, because they perceive Republicans of having an unchristian attitude. These people hold the same beliefs about social issues as you do, but do not support Republicans because of the things I have previously pointed out. The last thing I’ll say is, look at the current rap sheet of Bush and his party and you will see several things that go against every principle that most people hold.
Thank You
