I bought Dead Rising 2, available on PS3, Xbox, and PC.
I bought the PS3 version.

The genre is zombie/hack 'n' slash/beat 'em up.

There are hundreds of weapons, axes, benches, Halloween masks, crowbars, lawnmowers, shotguns, shampoo (squirt it on the ground to make the zombies fall), vibrators, cash registers, etc. You can make your own powerful weapons which yield double experience points. The weapon making system is extremely similar to Fallout 3, but there are far more schematics.

There is a potion making system. Place any two food items in a blender and you will get a potion.

You can not control what increases when you level up. The game just tells you what you get. This is the only thing I don't really like about this awesome game.

DR2 uses a mission system. All of the missions are timed, and the timer starts when the mission becomes available, not when you start it. So you can have eight different missions counting down at once. You have to pick which missions you will do and which you will ignore. You can reset all of the missions at any time, but you will lose your items. Fortunately, you will keep your level.

The online play has two modes. The first mode is just the single player mode, but with a friend. The second mode is a series of minigames played against three other actual players. You can win a lot of money for your single player game playing the online minigames.

Here is a gameplay trailer of the single player game, the HUD looks different than mine, but everything else looks the same.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhQhOrW39yU

The more I play DR2, the more I like it. Give it a rent, its lots of fun.

1. Compared to L4D2, what do you think?...
I've been looking at it. I lurve me the Zombie games, and checked out DR2 on youtube, but was on the fence about getting it. Steam wants $40.

Zombie tangent - L4D and L4D2 are only $6.79 each right now, or both for $10.19. I'm becoming a big fan of the Steam specials :)

2. L4D is a Xbox series, I only have a PS3 and a Wii.
I have watched some L4D videos, and the game looks like a serious shooter, while DR2 is humorous beat 'em up.

3. I play it on PC...
though it would be fun on Wii :)

If you've got a PC that can handle it, that's a great deal on Steam right now. I like the "fast" 28 Days Later type zombies in the L4Ds, instead of the slow, Romero ones that I've seen in the DR2 videos.

4. so I bought this on your recommendation
not bad, so far. I still need to get into it. I'm having trouble figuring out how to resupply my health properly. At one point, I lost my beautiful axe, and suddenly the juice I had picked up earlier was in my hand, and I drank it. I can't figure out how to drink the juice/eat the food when I need it, not when it randomly appears in my hand.

 Seems like fun, though. I'll get into it some more tomorrow, I think.

My sister is buying me a copy of NCAA Football '11. The reason I'm letting her do it is, she lives in Alabama, and the Gamestops there have changed the packaging a bit. Instead of the drawing of St Tebow that comes standard, they use a picture of St Tebow crying after the SEC Championship game. Sweet, sweet tears.

6. okay, stupid question
I'm reading a walkthrough, just to try and get my bearings. It's talking about inventory slots. Maybe I should read further, but how, exactly, does one access the inventory? And then pick what weapons/food items one is carrying? And how do you give weapons to your civilians when you're escorting them?

7. On the ps3, the inventory is accessed through the R1 and L1 buttons.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 03:01 PM by ZombieHorde
Your inventory is in the upper right hand corner of the screen. You can not see your inventory in the pause menu.

And then pick what weapons/food items one is carrying?

Select the item you want to use with the R1 or L1 buttons, then press square.

And how do you give weapons to your civilians when you're escorting them?

Approach the survivor and look above his or her head. You will see the words "Give Item" or "Give Weapon," and you will see the button to press next to those words. On the PS3, it's the circle button. If you give a survivor a gun, the gun will have infinite ammo.

------------

To use a magazine, the magazine must be in your inventory, but you don't need to read it. Reading it will just tell you what it does. As soon as you drop the magazine, you will loose the affect.

Go to the Slot Ranch Casino, find the largest thing in the middle of the slot machines, and climb it. You will find some free Zombrex, a shotgun, and a light machine gun. You can only get the Zombrex once per game, but the guns respawn every time you load into this area. This casino also has a blender behind the bar, use it to make potions. Vodka + vodka = painkiller (1/2 damage for 1 minute), whiskey + whiskey = painkiller as well. There are two of each behind the bar. Make painkillers and use them during boss fights.

Palisades Mall has a gun store, it carries two shotguns and two sniper rifles, these, like most all items, respawn with each load. Aim with L1.

If you buy car keys, the keys stay with each game play.

edit: to heal yourself, eat food or drink juices you have made. Different foods heal different amounts. Junk food heals small amounts, healthy food heals large amounts.

The best advice I can give you is to let Katie die and ignore the story missions. Just save people, kill zombies, and EXPLORE. You can restart the game with your same character at any time in the start menu. Select quit, then select restart story. You will loose the few items in your inventory, but you keep your level, xp, combo cards, costumes you are currently wearing, costumes in your locker (in the bathroom safe house), cash, and vehicle keys.

9. If you try to save her, and complete the story missions, you won't have time to explore and learn
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 01:12 PM by ZombieHorde
how the game world is set up. DR2 has multiple endings anyways, so you might as well see the worst ending first.

If she dies, the game will tell you failed and the truth will be gone forever, don't worry about this, just select Continue Playing.

10. I thought it had multiple endings
I'll go ahead and let her zombify, then. Will I need the Zombrex for myself at any point?

11. No, but there are at least two other people who need some.
Edited on Fri Oct-22-10 02:12 PM by ZombieHorde
I have not saved everyone yet, so there could be more than two others who need Zombrex. One of them was a story mission survivor, so if you let Katie turn, you will not have to worry about him.

When you restart the story, you will lose all of the Zombrex you have, so there is no reason to horde it.

If you need money to buy some, get all three gambling magazines in your inventory and hit up a pay to play gambling machine, such as a giant slot machine. Always bet as much as you can.

edit, I said the free zombrex, shotgun, and lmg were in the Slot Ranch Casino, but they are actually in the Yucatan Casino. Large structure in the middle of the casino. Sorry about that.

12. Meet the Contestants
This is a mission that has appeared a few hours into the game. I encounter somebody with a motorcycle equipped with chainsaws, and I'm supposed to beat him somehow. The walkthrough just says to beat him.

 He kicks my ass every time.

So does the psychopath with a shard of glass in the mission Chuck's a Role Model, or something like that. Two hits and I was dead.

Help!

I'm enjoying the game so far, but there aren't enough blenders. And I've never seen so many malls and casinos without ATMs. :D (Yes, I've been building hackers and getting lots of money.)

Go to workshop in center of rocky area, and make electric rake. Ditch your bike, it doesn't help. Then dodge him when he comes at you in such a way he runs into a tree. He'll pause, then you can get 1-2 rake attacks in. Repeat.

Can't recall who you mean by the second one.

Have you bought the SUV yet? It is a fun way to kill zombies.

16. not yet
I admit, I've been cheating. I decided to try completing everything using a walkthrough from Gamefaqs.com

I'm starting to think the guy who wrote it is full of shit, however. He claims he made it through, using the walkthrough, starting at level one. I'm up to level 28 and I can't get everything done on the time frame he's laying out. And he said nothing about beating the guy in Meet the Contestant, just to beat him and move on, like it's nothing.

FWIW, I almost beat him yesterday, but I died just before I finished him. I never could dodge and get him to hit a tree, but I'd just take the hit and then wail on him when he stopped to gloat. I messed up, however. I was using the beer hat for health (which is awesome, btw, for topping up, as it gives you PP). I used it too much and spent five minutes puking. Next time, I'm just carrying 4 or 5 coffee creamers.

I tried using the electric rake, but every time I got hit I dropped it. Then I moved to the Defiler, which I use to kill psychopaths (one hit kills). It was too slow. So I moved back to the old stand-by, the Spiked Bat. I could get two or three hits in before he moved.

I used the Defiler on Ted, though.

Speaking of Ted, man, was that disturbing. I played it through again to show Haele, and she actually almost got upset.

I figure I'll just keep rerunning the opening few missions until I get to a high enough level to accomplish some stuff beyond 2-2.

Last thing. The drill+bucket combo sucks. Yeah, it gives PP nicely, but it only kills one zombie and then you have to pick it up again. I'm sticking with the Spiked Bat and Defiler for my weapons until I find something else I like better. I did mix a drill and a spear I found, that was fun.

Try some juices. The painkiller will reduces all damage by 1/2 for a minute. I use painkiller for almost all boss fights.

Don't forget to check out the posters, a few of them give you new combo cards. One of them gives you the Tenderizers, MMA golves + nails. Tenderizers last much longer than the spiked bat, and the sports store next to the safe house has several pairs of MMA gloves. They also award 100 pp, as opposed to the 50 pp you get from the spiked bat.

I still have not tamed Snowflake yet.

The drill bucket does suck, but there are other one-time use weapons which are great.

18. Snowflake is actually fairly easy
stop off at the BBQ joint in the Food Court first, go back to the kitchen, and pick up three steaks there.

What I always do is just drop all three steaks in front of one of the pillars, the one where the Tiki torch drops. I drop the meat right in the flame, it doesn't seem to bother the tiger. Then I hide behind the pillar, just showing to the left. Snowflake usually (usually) will charge from the direction and stop to eat the meat.

If you accidentally hit her during the Ted fight, you'll need to feed her another steak or two, which you can pick up out of her cage.

For juices, where are blenders besides the Yucatan casino? And is it just any two juices? And what do you mean by checking out posters?

19. I will have to try your pillar technique.
There is a blender in Shots and Awe in the Americana Casino, Slot Ranch Casino behind the bar (this one is great for painkiller, whiskey x2 or vodka x2), Rojo Diable in the food court, the Grotto bar in the Palisades Mall, and Pub 'o Gold in the Silver Strip. There are others as well.

The Playboy posters don't seem to have any Combo Cards, but the movie posters often do. Walk up to one and see if you get a prompt to examine it. For example, there is one in the Royal Flush Plaza, on a stand (as opposed to a wall), out side of Casual Gals. I think this might be the Spiked Gloves card. Check out all the movie posters, you will get Combo Cards, some of which are actually useful.

the spiked gloves sound cool. What's the range on them? That's the thing I like about the bat, good range and it can take out a lot of zombies at once.

21. The range is smaller than the bat, but they last longer, give more pp, and they do more damage. nt
